Found Around Fort Worth

Since I'm running out of pictures for Stuff We Find In Our Yard, I thought I'd start something called Found Around Fort Worth where I'll share with y'all a pic of something I've found around Fort Worth.

First off, I try to be as positive as I can here on Fort Worth Mama but I just had to share this picture with y'all.  I've seen this man for the past week and a half on this same corner begging for money.  The other day I saw this man begging for money WHILE TALKING ON HIS CELL PHONE.  How is that even possible?

Chime in, please.

My First Attempt @ Shabby Chic

Soooo I'm, like, in love with shabby chic.  You couldn't tell it by my house because I have nothing that is shabby chic.  Shabby, yes.  Chic, notsomuch.  Now, I've refinished furniture before but it's not like I'm a pro or anything...far from it.  I've only refinished two things - a hope chest and also a double-size bed.  The double-size bed I refinished with my grandpa - something I will always cherish.

Before

So when I saw these two nightstands at a friend's yard sale, I saw my first shabby chic project.  They screamed white and turquoise to me.  They said, Shelley, take us home and try to make us pretty.  So that's what I did - I tried my very best.  Trial and error, trial and error.

Before

I watched a couple of videos online and learned how to use Vaseline to give the paint a chippy look.  First I sanded the nightstands.  Then I painted both pieces with turquoise paint.  Then I put Vaseline in different spots on the nightstands.  And then spray painted them with a gloss white.  Then I went back and wiped off the Vaseline and, wallah, spots of turquoise appeared.  That process worked great.  What wasn't so great was how I applied the Vaseline.  The nightstands came out polka dotted looking, almost like a cow print - not the look I was going for.

I went around the edges with a sanding block hoping that would make them look better.  It helped a little bit but not a lot.  I wound up taping over the edges that I had sanded and then spray painted the nightstands again with the white, to cover up the polka dotted cow mess that I had created. I then stenciled on a few designs and put on some new knobs and called them good.

After

Are they perfect?

After
Not by a longshot.

After

But I think they turned out pretty dang cute.

I also painted this child's rocking chair.  You can kind of tell what I meant about the turquoise looking like a cow print - I didn't go back over this with more spray paint, just added the hot pink polka dots.

If you like the looks of these, they're for sale at the Vineyard's Antique Mall in Colleyville, booth Italy 13.

Fort Worth Stock Show

Who doesn't love the Fort Worth Stock Show

Maddie checking out the goats
First of all, let me apologize for the quality of my pictures - most of them were taken with my phone.

Chicks looking at chicks

Of course we go to the stock show every year.  My husband's birthday just so happens to fall during the time of the stock show, and we love to go and walk around the grounds and have a couple of adult beverages and watch the girls smile when they see all the animals.

I love this man

One of our favorite things to do at the stock show is walk around the exhibit hall and look at all the cool things they have for sale.  Like, for instance, this cool little horse on rollers - you make him go by pushing down on the pedals:

She's as fast as lightning

You might even run into one of the coolest cows around - Miss Elsie of Borden Milk fame:

And her son Beauregard:

On our way to the sale barn, we ran into a nice cowboy that let the little ones pet his horse.

My mom & girls petting horse

In the sale barn, there's another area with different vendors.  The girls and I fell in love with this gorgeous chair/chaise.  We'll take one for every room, please.

Yay for turquoise!!
There really are some very talented, creative people out there and a lot of them are selling their wares at the Fort Worth Stock Show.  You really ought to go check them out.

Leaving the Fort Worth Stock Show
There's so much to see and do at the stock show.  You really just have to go and experience it for yourself.  It's legendary, you know!

We had a great time at the Fort Worth Stock Show, just like we do every year.

Stuff We Find In Our Yard

One day I looked out the window and thought it was The Attack of the Goats - there was like 20 of them in our yard.  After eating everything and anything that was green, except the grass, we were able to shoo them back to their home (they belong to a neighbor).

That reminds me...did I ever tell you about the time I was sitting in my recliner in the living room and I happened to look up out of our "Hello, Goodbye Window" and there was this big ol' eyeball just staring at me - I mean it was a huge eyeball - ginormous eyeball in the corner of the window.  I got up to see what it was, and this huge streak of blonde goes running westbound.

The peeping Tom turned out to be this cow:

Isn't it a cute cow?  I wound up calling this cow "friend" because every time we'd go outside, it would come up to the fence.  Guess it was just wanting to get a closer look at us.

Repotting Festival @ Calloway's Nurseries

Don't miss out on the Repotting Festival @ Calloway's Nurseries.  Do you have plants that have outgrown their container?  Is there an empty corner that could use a splash of color to brighten your home?  Does the colder weather make you dread repotting outdoors?  Come to the Repotting Festival at Calloway's Nurseries and replant in comfortable greenhouses on potting benches.

Help yourself to Calloway’s Premium Potting Soil and one feeding of Calloway’s Lasting Beauty plant food.  Take home a freshly planted container to liven up your indoor spaces for the Winter months!  Bring your plants or empty containers and leave the mess at home.  Or go pick out new plants and containers to purchase and pot them up while you’re there.

The Repotting Festival is this Saturday, January 19, 2012 and starts at 9:00 and is happening at the Calloway's on South Hulen, as well as the Hurst, Southlake and 13 other Calloway’s Nursery locations.
