Found Around Fort Worth

Since I'm running out of pictures for Stuff We Find In Our Yard, I thought I'd start something called Found Around Fort Worth where I'll share with y'all a pic of something I've found around Fort Worth.

First off, I try to be as positive as I can here on Fort Worth Mama but I just had to share this picture with y'all.  I've seen this man for the past week and a half on this same corner begging for money.  The other day I saw this man begging for money WHILE TALKING ON HIS CELL PHONE.  How is that even possible?

Chime in, please.

  1. There is a huge need for improvement in services for homeless and destitute individuals/families in Fort Worth. Over the past year, I have noticed more and more people standing on corners begging for money, maybe because someone close to me has recently been through a similar, very difficult situation. IF this guy is truly destitute and in need of a few bucks (bus money, meal for the day, or worse...) it's not unlikely that one of the following has happened: 1) he bought a very cheap TRAC phone and pays when he can to put minutes on it, 2)he stole/borrowed it from someone, 3)a family member pays for it to keep in touch. Most of us assume the worst about people on the fringe of society, but it truly is a dog-eat-dog world when you have nothing out there but the clothes on your back. I'd be very interested to find out what his story is...

  2. You have given me a different perspective on things, Melissa. I guess we're (or I was) brought up to believe that if someone's begging for money on the corner, then they are desperate for money. The number one thing that comes to mind is they need the basic necessities, like food, water, shelter. So when I saw this man, whom I've seen quite often at this same spot begging for money, and he was talking on a cell phone, it just -- honestly, it irritated me. My husband and I pay over $125 a month for two cell phones and I was thinking here this man needs food and shelter and he's sitting there talking on a cell phone. I just couldn't fathom it. You have opened my eyes. I know if I had a family member in this situation I would do anything I could to keep in touch with them and know that they're okay.
