The World Would Be A Lot Better Place Without MOSQUITOES

What good are mosquitoes anyway?  All they do is transmit diseases, parasites & viruses.  These pesky things have been around for over 30 million years, so it looks to me like we're not going to get rid of them any time soon.

You've probably heard on the news lately all the talk about West Nile in Tarrant and surrounding counties.  West Nile Virus is really rampant this year.  Some even say the incidence of West Nile virus cases in North Texas has reached epidemic proportions.

Read more here: http://www.mcclatchydc.com/2012/07/18/156615/west-nile-case-levels-in-texas.html#storylink=cpy

Someone my husband knows was hospitalized recently with something similar to West Nile - something called St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV).  It too is transmitted to humans via infected mosquitoes.

Did you know that most people bitten by a mosquito infected with West Nile Virus or SLEV never experience symptoms of the virus?  I didn't know that.  Also, the virus cannot be spread from person-to-person.  It's only spread by infected mosquito to person.

The virus can also affect animals such as horses.  West Nile Virus in pets is rare.  Click here for more information about WNV and your dog or cat.

You should get to the doctor immediately if the following symptoms persist for more than a few days.  Symptoms of West Nile Virus, according to the Mayo Clinic, are:

Fever
Headaches
Body Aches
Fatigue
Skin Rash (Occasionally)
Swollen Lymph Glands (Occasionally)
Eye Pain (Occasionally)

The Mayo Clinic also says that less than 1% of people infected with West Nile Virus will experience serious neurological infection.  That can include swelling of the brain (encephalitis) or the membrane surrounding the brain (meningoencephalitis).  It can also include meningitis or inflammation of the  membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord.  Signs and symptoms of a serious neurological infection are:

High Fever
Severe Headache
Stiff Neck
Disorientation or Confusion
Stupor or Coma
Tremors or Muscle Jerking
Lack of Coordination
Convulsions
Pain
Partial Paralysis or Weakness
Altered Mental State

According to the Mayo Clinic, signs and symptoms of West Nile Virus could last for a few days.  But signs and symptoms of encephalitis or meningitis could last for weeks and neurological effects could be permanent.

According to the CDC, the symptoms for SLEV are similar to West Nile.  It takes 5 to 15 days after the bite of an infected mosquito to develop symptoms of SLEV.  With West Nile, the onset of symptoms is usually 3 to 14 days.

With all that being said, the best thing you can do is hibernate in your house and become a hermit.  Just kidding.  The best thing you can do to prevent getting these viruses is to try and not get bit by mosquitoes.

If at all possible, wear clothing that covers most of your body.  (Not likely in the middle of a Texas summer.)

Wear clothing that blends into the background.  According to How Stuff Works, female mosquitoes, which are the only mosquitoes that bite you, their visual sensors aren't very keen, but they can see you moving if you are wearing clothing that contrasts the background.

Use a mosquito repellant that contains DEET at a concentration of 7.5 percent to 100 percent.  Lower concentrations are sufficient for most outdoor protection, and a 15-percent concentration is recommended for children.  This is what's recommended by the website How Stuff WorksTarrant County Public Health recommends we use an insect repellant that contains up to 20% DEET.

Eliminate sources of standing water in your yard.

Stay inside at dusk and dawn.

The City of Grapevine suggests treating standing water that can't be drained, such as in creeks and bar ditches, with something called Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis.

Also, if you see a dead bird, you might want to call the Texas Department of Health Regional Zoonosis Control Office.  You can find phone numbers here for the regional office in your area.  Their website says their testing of birds is mainly restricted to crows, bluejays, and hawks.  Never handle a dead bird with your bare hands.  Dead birds can carry many more diseases other than just West Nile or SLEV.

Click here for more information from Tarrant County Public Health.

Click here to get the latest information from Tarrant County Public Health regarding numbers of people infected and ZIP codes where they live.  This page also lists the the location of mosquito pools and whether or not they tested positive for West Nile.

Fort Worth Mama's Macaroni Salad

So the other day I started making the macaroni salad I posted last year.  Of course I had to come to my blog to read the recipe because I have a severe case of CRS.

While reading the recipe, I noticed that the second ingredient was 2 cups of mayonnaise.  Yes, I said that right, 2 cups of mayonnaise - that's just, like, crazy.  I could have made a snowman out of two cups of mayo.  What was I thinking?  So I decided to revamp the recipe a little bit.  Here you go:

Fort Worth Mama's Macaroni Salad

1 (20 oz.) bag medium-sized pasta shells
1 cup mayonnaise
1/2 cup sour cream
1/4 cup cider vinegar
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon pepper (I add a little more - depends on your taste)
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon garlic salt
1 teaspoon salt (I add a little more)
Couple of squirts of Dijon mustard
1 bell pepper chopped finely
1 onion chopped finely
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (I use sharp)

Boil pasta in salted water according to package directions.  Drain and rinse pasta - set aside to cool to room temperature.

Mix together all of the ingredients except bell pepper, onion and cheese.

Mix sauce with the pasta.

Add in chopped bell pepper, onion and cheddar cheese.

Refrigerate.

Try not to inhale the whole bowl.  You've got to feed your entire family, you know.  It can't always be just about you, you, you - geez, Louise!

Free Appraisals @ Botanic Gardens in Fort Worth

Did y'all read about this in the Star Telegram Sunday?  There was a full one-page ad about it.  I thought it sounded interesting enough.  You can bring in a maximum of three different items and Heritage Auctions will give you a free verbal appraisal.

Their website says:  "Qualified consignments accepted.  Cash advances available.  Sell your qualified items outright."

Heritage Auctions will be at Botanic Gardens on Friday, July 27 from 9:00 to 4:00.  Saturday, July 28 from 10:00 to 4:00.  Sunday, July 29 from 10:00 to 2:00.

They could be interested in anything from rare coins to Indian art to fine wines and anything in between.  Might be worth climbing into your 79,698-degree attic and finding that old teapot Uncle Cletus gave you when you were a kid and taking a trip to the Botanic Gardens to see what it's worth.

Tin Can Planting @ Calloway's Nursery

Today we went to Calloway's Nursery so my kiddos could participate in something they call Callie's Kids.  I wrote about this free event last month.

Today the kids got to decorate a tin can and then plant tomato seeds in it and then take it home with them.

Look how proud they are of themselves - Little Stinkers!!

I can't go to Calloway's and not take pictures of the pretty flowers they have there, so indulge me for just a sec.

Ice Plant

Bluebells

There...I feel better now.

Calloway's next event is August 15th.  It will be the last event of the summer and it's all about beautiful butterflies.  Go check it out if you get a chance.

As a side note:  On our way out, we saw this sucker -

It's my favorite kind of Cicada Killer - a dead one.

Gram's Pink Stuff

When I was a little girl, my grandma used to make this fluffy, delicious, pink concoction when she had get-togethers at her house.  She'd place a bowl of it right in the corner of the table just close enough to the edge of the table where my little arms could reach it.  When nobody was looking (or so I thought) I'd swipe my finger through it every time I'd walk by.  I simply adored this stuff.

One day when my Gram was putting this on the table, I said, What do you call that, Gram?  She said that she didn't think it really had a name and she asked me what I'd like to call it.  I said, Pink Stuff.  So the name stuck.

If someone were to ask me what my favorite meal is, I'd say weenies and kraut, fried potatoes, beans and cornbread, and Gram's Pink Stuff.

Gram's Pink Stuff

1 can cherry pie filling (21-ounce can)
1 can crushed pineapple (8-ounce can)
1 can condensed milk (12-ounce can)
1 container thawed whipped topping aka Cool Whip (8-ounce tub)

Pour pie filling, pineapple and condensed milk in bowl and mix with hand mixer (you could mix by hand if you wanted the cherries to keep their shape, but I like mine all smooshed up).  Fold in Cool Whip.  Refrigerate.

4th Annual Shootin' For A Cure

Saturday, August 25th marks the 4th annual Shootin' For A Cure in Cresson, TX.  This event benefits the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

The Miles For Melons team started this event back in 2009 to help one walker in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day For A Cure and to help with medical expenses for one of their dearest friends who found out earlier in the year that she had stage three breast cancer.

The registration fee is $50 per shooter.  This $50 pays for your shooting, dinner, drinks, and one raffle ticket.  If you just want to go to the event and not shoot, that will cost you $15 and you'll get dinner and drinks and a raffle ticket.  They accept cash, check, and credit card payments.

They will have five gun stations. The gun stations are set up with "Annie Oakley" style shooting.  There will be six rounds where six shooters will compete against each other trying to knock one another out based upon the hits on the clay target. If you leave a fragment of the clay after you shoot, the other shooters have a chance to shoot the piece of the clay you missed.  Winners of the six qualifying rounds will face off in the final round for the winning round gift prize.

Also, $20 will get you one ticket or $100 will get you six tickets to register to win a 2012 Honda Four Trax 400 Rancher 4X4ES.  Tickets to win a Benelli Super Black Eagle II 12-gauge with hard case and two cases of shells are $5 for one ticket, $20 for six tickets.

There will be a live auction and a raffle where you could get anything from two tickets to the National Rodeo Finals in Las Vegas (including hotel room) to Ariat gift cards to custom jewelry to cowboy coolers.  Each raffle ticket costs only $1.

Registration begins at 11:00 @ The Gray Ranch, 617 Clear Skies Court, Cresson 76035.  Shooting starts at 11:30.  The live auction begins at 6:00.  The BBQ dinner and the live band start at 6:30.  Bring your gun and ammo and a lawn chair.

See y'all there!

Max at the Fort Worth Library

Last Tuesday, I took my two girls to the East Regional Fort Worth Library so they could meet Max of Max and Ruby fame.

My two-and-a-half-year-old sat in awe as she watched big ol' Max come walking in the room.

This cute program was presented by Ms. Jacqui Rash.  Man, I wish I had her energy and her enthusiasm.  She had me and everybody else in the room smiling the whole time.  She was absolutely fantastic.  She sang songs and got all the kids involved.  She orchestrated somewhat of a play where some kids in the audience were chosen and they got to act out the story of Max's Dragon Shirt.

My oldest daughter got to play the Ruby whose dress was too tight.  (She thought that was awesome.)  Ms. Rash read a couple of more stories and she also got the kids involved with the song Little Bunny Foo Foo.

After the presentation, all of the kids got to go up and meet Max.  They also had a craft for all the kids to do.  Isn't he cute?

If you get a chance, take your little ones to go meet Max. (Tomorrow is the last day to meet Max so you better hurry!)

Thanks, Fort Worth Library, for offering neat programs like this one.

Our Fort Worth Herd Cow Camp Experience

Since I posted something about the Fort Worth Herd's Cow Camp a while back, I thought it would be fun to go check it out for myself.  We went this past Sunday when it was, like 5,728 degrees outside.  Not really.  It was closer to 100.  But I came prepared with cheapy handheld electric fans, sweat-rags, and a bottle of water in my big ol' mom-purse.

Cow Camp is held every Saturday and Sunday from 1:30 -2:30 from Memorial Day until Labor Day.

Cow Camp is held in the Fort Worth Stockyards.  Driving down North Main, we turned east down Exchange Avenue and parked in the northeast parking lot there which is free.

We walked west down exchange, and Cow Camp is held behind the Livestock Exchange Building which is on the north side of Exchange Avenue.

Luckily this camp is held in the shade.  They have bleachers there for you to sit on.  Let me warn you that you probably shouldn't wear some cute white shorts because your buns will be covered in about 50 shades of dirt after sitting on those bleachers.  Cows and horses and humans kick up a lot of dirt that winds up on those bleachers so be prepared to get a little gritty.

It started off with one of the cowboys explaining a little bit about life in the 1800's.  The cowboys and cowgirls asked if any kids in the audience wanted to volunteer for a demonstration.  The kids that volunteered got to wear hats and vests and wild rags.  The herd cowgirl explained the importance of each of those pieces of clothing.  The little volunteers also got to pass around ropes and show them to the audience.  At the end of the presentation, the volunteers were presented with a really, really cool special gift.  (My oldest didn't want to volunteer because she thought it was going to make her hot with all that clothing on - not true though!)

The herd cowboys and cowgirl told us about spurs and saddles and branding and how each of those are used.  It really was very informative.

They really took their time and explained each and every thing in a very entertaining way.  My favorite part was this:

That whip was LOUD!  I think I might purchase one so I can scare the youknowwhat out of my kids.  How fun would that be?!!??!

It really was a fun experience.  I think my oldest child learned quite a bit.  Heck, I learned quite a bit and I'm 39 years old and have lived in Cowtown all my life!  I'm so glad there's things like this to go see and do in this great city.  Go check it out.  Be sure and leave them a donation on the way out.  They don't ask for much and the experience is worth way more than their suggested donation amount.

Also, while you're in the stockyards, be sure and check out Stockyards Station where your little one might get a pat on the head from a stiff ol' cowpoke who's looking for work.

Be sure and stick around until 4:00 where you can see those cowgirls and cowboys you met during Cow Camp move the Fort Worth Herd.

AWESOME!

Creamy Fiesta Dip

I must admit I'm not very creative when it comes to food.  I can follow a recipe like a champ, but when it comes to creating a recipe, pffft, notsumuch.  So I was, like, super-duper proud of myself for coming up with this.  It tastes phenomenal.  My husband thought it would be delicious stuffed in some jalapenos and wrapped in bacon.  I think it would be great slathered on some flour tortillas and make pinwheels out of them.  It's probably at its best when it's sitting on top of a tortilla chip.

I'm going to go off course here a minute and talk about a brand of tortilla chips that I just discovered that I'm in love with.  I found them at Albertson's.  And here they are:

Yes, the bag is ripped and the chips are 3/4 of the way gone - that's because Mama got ahold of them.  I might have shared a couple with the youngins because I have a big heart like that.

Julio's chips are flavored tortilla chips.  The number three ingredient is lime which I think might be why I like them so much.  They're manufactured in Del Rio, TX, so that is awesome.  But I will say, if you use these chips to eat the Creamy Fiesta Dip, you might get a little overwhelmed with all the flavors going on in your mouth.  So I'd suggest just using a plain, unflavored tortilla chip.

Okay.  I told you I was going to go off course but I just had to tell you about Julio's chips because they are the bomb.com.

So back to the Creamy Fiesta Dip.  Here we go:

Creamy Fiesta Dip

2 8-ounce packages of cream cheese - room temperature
1/2 cup mexicorn
1 1-ounce package dry ranch dip
1 chipotle pepper diced
1 Tbs. adobo sauce
1 1/2 Tbs. chopped cilantro

Mix all ingredients in a bowl and then refrigerate.  Serve with plain tortilla chips.

This dip probably tastes better a day after you make it so all of the flavors have a chance to marry.  (Look at me talking all chef-like now - holla!)

Bon appettit.

Staycation in Cowtown - Tour Fort Worth Stockyards On The Cheap

I don't know about y'all, but there is no way in the world we're going to be able to take a vacation this year.  With my husband being on strike for two months, we just do not have the funds to go anywhere.  I've done everything in my power to not let that two-month strike affect my children.  I've taken them to free events and cheap events and we've had the best time.

I read somewhere that if you're low on funds but want to do something fun, you should consider having a staycation - you know, vacation in your own hometown - walk around your own town like you're a tourist.  I think we've got the best town to have a staycation in - so much history in this here Cowtown.

What better way to learn about this great city of ours than this GPS-guided tour of the Fort Worth Stockyards?  It normally costs $12 per person.  But you can get this 2 for 1 deal from Dealsaver.

Be sure and click here to watch a preview of the tour.

It really looks like a lot of fun, and 12 bucks ain't gonna break the bank I don't think.

Click here to purchase 2 GPS-guided tours of the Fort Worth Stockyards for $12.  You have until Wednesday, July 11, 2012 at midnight to purchase this deal.

Tequila & Rum Soaked Watermelon

I found this recipe on Pinterest and decided I'd tweak it a bit.  Here's the recipe I came up with:

Tequila & Rum Soaked Watermelon
About half of a medium-sized watermelon cut into bite-sized chunks - rind removed*
1 cup sugar
3/4 cup water
1/4 cup rum
3/4 cup tequila
2 limes
salt

Cut watermelon into bite-sized chunks with rind removed.  Arrange in single layer in 9x13 baking dish.  Place sugar and water in saucepan and heat until sugar is dissolved.  Let mixture cool slightly.  Add tequila and rum to sugar water.  Stir.  Pour yummy concoction over your bite-sized watermelons.  Squeeze lime juice over watermelons and sprinkle with some salt if you want - but I wouldn't put very much.  Cover with plastic wrap and let sit in fridge overnight.  Drain liquid.  (I drained the liquid into a bowl and it's sitting in my fridge waiting for me to mix it with a Sprite - I bet that will be yummy)

That's all there is to it.  Be prepared to have your flip-flops blown off because these are pretty dang good.

*Take my advice and cut the watermelon into smaller chunks than what is pictured above.

If you plan on taking these to a get-together, make sure you label the container in some way that the other guests will know these watermelons are for adults only.

Story Time at Fort Worth Libraries

My, my, my how story time has changed at my local library.  Just a few years ago, I took my oldest child to story time at the East Regional Library where the librarian read a book and then the kids got to color a picture.  I wasn't too impressed, so I never went back...until today.  I'm so glad we went back.

Paper Lanterns
Today my children, along with about 20 more kids, got to sing songs, dance, go on a "bear hunt".  The librarian read three stories to them.  Then the kids got to color, make a firework necklace and make a paper lantern.

Firework Necklace

Firework Necklace

Go here to see what time your local library offers story time and then go check it out.  I think you'll be glad you did.

And if you want to make the paper lanterns, go here and check out this tutorial.  If you want to make the firework necklace, this post will give you an idea on how to make those.

Initiative Promotes Children's Bicycle Safety in Fort Worth

A partnership between first responders, medical students, and ice cream producers has resulted in an initiative to promote bicycle safety for children.

If police officers see a child 18 years or younger not wearing a helmet while riding their bike, they will give the child a helmet and give them information about the City's helmet ordinance which is:  Children and teens under age 18 are required to wear a helmet at all times while riding a bicycle. The penalty for failure to wear a helmet is $50 for the first incident and $100 for the second.

If police officers, firefighters or MedStar paramedics spot children riding bikes while wearing their helmets, then those children will be rewarded with a coupon for free ice cream donated by Texas Dairy Queen (yum - could go for a Blizzard right about now), Blue Bell Ice Cream, and Braum's.

What a great program.
